- Commodity name: Planar Holographic Grating
Holographic gratings are commonly used in applications sensitive to stray light. A substrate coated with a photosensitive material is placed between intersecting beams of monochromatic and coherent light generated by a laser, exposing the photosensitive material. The intersecting laser beams produce a series of parallel and equidistant interference fringes, with the fringe intensity varying according to a sinusoidal curve. Since the solubility of the photosensitive material is determined by the intensity of the light illuminating it, the interference fringes reveal different light intensities on the surface of the photosensitive material. A reflective coating can then be deposited on the substrate, and the grating can be replicated using the same process as the original grating. Because the grating line shape and spacing are perfectly consistent, the stray light generated is far less than that of a scribed grating. Holographic gratings can employ two groove profiles: sinusoidal and blazed.
